Avenches or "Aventicum", once the capital of Roman Helvetia, with a population of over 10,000, now has 2,200 inhabitants. This captivating little town is built on a small hill and offers a host of tourist attractions: a medieval Old Town, Roman remains, a horse stud and art collections. The rural area around Avenches is a tempting location for rambling and cycling; the nearby Lake of Murten is great for swimming and boat trips and a visit to the range of different museums or indoor swimming pool is the ideal way to spend a rainy day.
An ideal place for families
The Avenches Youth Hostel is located a short distance from the Old Town and is set in a large and beautiful garden. It is suitable for families with older children, who show interest for Roman history, horses or aeroplanes or who enjoy boat trips and cycling. This is an ideal place to spend a relaxing holiday in a historic setting!
Getting here
One hour by train from Berne to Avenches via Kerzers; 1½ hours by train from Lausanne to Avenches. The youth hostel is about 15 minutes' walk from the station.
